Yes, but not freely: the climb to the upper terraces runs in timed, guided slots with a daily limit, and visitors wear special sandals. Many tours say the climb is included. Check that on the booking page and on the site’s own channel before you travel.
Three is a comfortable number: one for Borobudur and Prambanan, one for the caves or Merapi, one for the city itself. With two days you must choose; with one, the temples are the usual pick.
For Borobudur, Prambanan and Merapi, yes – they are an hour or so away, while from Bali they are a flight. Yogyakarta is not a beach destination: the south-coast beaches are one to two hours away and usually sold together with the caves.
Not realistically. Operators put the drive at around seven hours one way, which is why the Bromo and Ijen listings are two- to four-day trips, often ending in Bali.
Cover shoulders and knees, bring a hat, sunscreen and water, and expect to remove your shoes at some sites. Sunrise tours start before dawn and it is cool at the top.
Sunrise climb slots are capped, so book ahead in the dry season and around holidays. Cancellation terms differ per listing; check each one before you pay.
Most visitors use a car with a driver for the distant sites and ride-hailing apps in town. Self-driving is uncommon; traffic is dense.
